1st Torneo Binter Macaronesia

13 de julho de 2005

The El Peñón golf club had not seen so many players sign up in years

The 1st Binter Macaronesia Golf Tournament, organised by the airline Binter Canarias in a bid to promote sport in the Islands, exceeded all forecasts on the number of participants: a total of 208 players took to the course last Saturday at the Real Club de Golf de Tenerife (El Peñón). Next weekend the tournament will continue at the El Cortijo Club de Campo, in Gran Canaria, ending on 23 July at the Santo da Serra course in Madeira.

Juan Tomás Barroso and Antonio Lecuona were declared the winning pair of the competition, held as a stableford fourball better ball, by completing the 18 holes with a total of 47 points. The winners received a package of a trip to Madeira with accommodation for 4 days and an invitation to play in the tournament to be held in Funchal.

In second place were Gaspar Collogan Soriano and Félix Fernández-Claverie, who completed the round with 45 points. Their prize was a BinterMás Frequent Flyer card with 6000 points, which will allow them to travel to Madeira. The third pair to classify, with 44 points, was formed by Alejandro Jiménez Grande and Miguel Martín Folgueras, who won flights to Lanzarote or Fuerteventura.

Fourth place in the classification table went to Rosario Concepción Martín and Katja Hintz Tort, who received a BinterMás card with points equivalent to a flight to La Palma, La Gomera or El Hierro. Antonio Bosa Array and Juan Antonio Cruz-Auñón Briones, with 42 points, took fifth place and won a BinterMás card with points equivalent to a flight to Gran Canaria.

During play, which had two tee-off times (8.30 am and 1.30 pm) and 104 participants for each slot, golfer Alexis Bellido scored a hole in one at the 7th hole, for which he received a special prize of a trip to Madeira. The longest putt on the 18th hole was achieved by Jorge Hodgson Golding, who hit the ball more than 10 metres and also won a journey to Madeira. The best series for the 16th hole was by Ana Escuder, who placed the ball right next to the flag.

Prizes were awarded at a special ceremony held at 8.00 pm in the Real Club de Golf de Tenerife, presided over by the Vice President of the club, Juan Carlos Rodríguez, and the Head of Communications and External Relations from Binter Canarias, José Luis Reina. A number of directors of the airline also attended the awards.

The tournament was sponsored and supported by the governments of the Canary Islands and Madeira, CapitalOne de Bankinter, Cicar, Overcame and Marcha SA. With the high level of participation by golfers in Tenerife it is envisaged that a similarly large number will also sign up for the tournaments in Gran Canaria and Madeira.
