Almería: Between the Mediterranean and the Desert

Almería is a destination of contrasts where the Mediterranean meets arid landscapes, pristine beaches, and a history shaped by diverse cultures. Situated in southeastern Andalusia, the city preserves a significant Moorish legacy and offers a surprising natural setting with scenery that looks straight out of a movie.

Alcazaba of Almería: The city's primary historical jewel and one of Spain's largest Moorish fortresses. From its walls, visitors can enjoy magnificent views of Almería and the Mediterranean, while its gardens, towers, and archaeological ruins showcase part of its history.

Almería Cathedral: One of the city's most unique buildings. Its fortress-like appearance stems from the historical need to protect the population against pirate attacks, blending defensive elements with impressive religious architecture.

Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park: One of Almería's great natural treasures. Its volcanic landscapes, cliffs, pristine beaches, and small coves form one of the most unique natural spaces in the Spanish Mediterranean.

Playa de los Genoveses: One of the most beautiful beaches in the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. Surrounded by nature and far from large developments, it stands out for its golden sand and crystal-clear waters.

Tabernas Desert (Desierto de Tabernas): Europe's only true desert and one of the province's most distinctive landscapes. Its scenery has starred in numerous films and series, especially in the Western genre.

Mojácar: This hilltop whitewashed village offers breathtaking views of the Mediterranean. Its narrow streets, whitewashed houses, and flower-filled balconies are perfect for getting lost in and discovering Almería's traditional character.

Chérigan: One of Almería's most iconic tapas. It consists of a slice of toasted bread topped with various ingredients, such as tuna, ham, cheese, or aioli, and is traditionally enjoyed alongside a drink.

Tabernero: One of the city's most traditional tapas. Prepared with a sautéed mix of tomato, onion, and pepper, usually served with bread, it is a fine example of local home-style cooking.

Gurullos: A traditional dish made with small pieces of handmade pasta, combined with different ingredients depending on the recipe, such as rabbit, fish, or vegetables. It is one of the most characteristic preparations of Almería's cuisine.

Caldo de pimentón: A traditional fisherman's stew from Almería made with fish, pepper, tomato, and garlic. Its intense flavor reflects the province's close relationship with the Mediterranean.

Raf Tomato (Tomate Raf): Grown in the La Cañada area of Almería, this tomato is one of the province's most celebrated agricultural products. It stands out for its intense flavor and perfect balance between sweetness and acidity.

Almería is located in the far southeastern corner of Andalusia on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, with a population of around 200,000 inhabitants. The province is noted for its incredible landscape diversity, ranging from extensive beaches and cliffs to desert zones and mountains.

Its Mediterranean climate features mild temperatures throughout most of the year, sparse rainfall, and a high number of sunshine hours. Thanks to these conditions, Almería is an ideal destination to enjoy its beaches and natural spaces almost year-round. The province also boasts a close connection to cinema. The Tabernas Desert and other Almería landscapes have served as the backdrop for numerous international film productions, making the area one of Europe's premier film locations for Westerns.
