Goat cheese: this delicacy made from the milk of the palm tree goat can be eaten raw or smoked. It is usually the ideal starter for any lunch, either fresh or roasted.
Chicharrones: another starter from the cuisine of La Palma. Fried cubes of pork bacon dipped in gofio.
Wheat stew: as well as vegetables and potatoes, wheat is the ingredient that makes this tasty stew different.
Picadillo soup: all the ingredients are chopped, hence its name. Hard-boiled eggs, chicken, beef, croutons, mint and salt are added to the chicken broth.
Fish with potatoes and mojo verde: a stewed vieja, a fried alfonsiño, a good grilled fillet of bigeye tuna.
Meat: goat in sauce, grilled pork, rabbit or kid are some of the meaty options that you can accompany with potatoes and mojo rojo, depending on the preparation.
Sweets and desserts: La Palma is a very sweet island, not only for the hospitality of its people but also for its exquisite confectionery. We start with Rapadura, a typical sweet of the island. It is made by heating sugar cane honey and adding coconut, chocolate, milk or egg. Almendrados and almond cheese, the nut mentioned above is the main ingredient in both sweets. The dessert par excellence in La Palma is Bienmesabe, originally from the Aridane Valley, where the almonds are harvested to make this dessert, which you will find in practically all the restaurants on the island. As well as grated almonds, it also has egg, palm tree honey and grated lemon. Príncipe Alberto: a dessert made with eggs, toasted almonds, chocolate, sugar, cream, hazelnuts and coffee - a real treat!
Wine: the Isla Bonita enjoys a great wine tradition, with its whites and malvasías standing out, although its reds have been gaining more and more importance in recent years. We don't usually recommend places or brands, but at this point we will make an exception to tell you a secret. If you have the chance to book a table at the Bodega Eufrosina (Garafía), try the red "tinto baboso" (slimy red). It is a real discovery, perhaps the best red wine in the Canary Islands? It is only sold directly at the bodega. The food is also very good and traditional. Call to make a reservation as soon as you have your plane tickets. It is becoming more and more popular.
