Nouadhibou is the second most important city in Mauritania and the commercial capital of the country, thanks to its port, which ensures the operation of various ships and the export of iron ore mined in Zouérate. This city is built longitudinally along a peninsula that stretches for some 10 km. It has a pleasant climate as a result of the trade winds that lower temperatures and chase away the clouds. Winter nights can be chilly. In addition to its sumptuous landscapes sculpted by erosion, the town is known for its sport fishing and its coastline offers a magnificent display of sandstone cliffs and immense fine sandy beaches. Etoile Bay is a paradise for migratory birds and offers ideal conditions for kitesurfing. There are numerous and large ships, which generate the interest, as well as tourists, of many maritime enthusiasts. There are almost 500 kilometres of coastline which has been the resting place of many ships since the 15th century but where it is very difficult to navigate due to the strong currents.
